The National Holiday Fund for Sick and Disabled Children

NHF

Bluewater Solutions is proud to support the work of the NHF. The charity (founded in 1987) takes chronically or terminally ill children, temporarily or permanently physically disabled children, on a unique international adventure to Florida, USA. In doing so parents, guardians and carers of those children have an opportunity to take a much needed respite, knowing their charges are having the best of care and continuity of medical attention while they are away from home. In April and November each year, the charity funds a group of up to 12 children on a trip to Orlando. Here they enjoy many of the theme parks in the Disney area. They also are treated to special events that have been arranged by the US sister organisation, NHFUSA. These include a presentation and displays by a local police force; a morning riding motorbikes with Honda motorbike enthusiasts and then a relaxing afternoon with a BBQ. There is also a day at the beach on the Gulf Coast. Each group is led by a leader with a Doctor and Senior Nurse in attendance. Each child is allocated a 'helper' whose skills are matched to the needs of the child. Several hundred children have now benefited from the work of this charity.

Malawi Agricultural Project

Malawi Agricultural Project

Early in 2009 Bluewater Solutions began to sponsor an off-road vehicle for an agricultural project working in the northern part of Malawi, Africa. The project was started as a wet season programme with the intention of addressing a problem with some rural poor families not being able to grow enough food for survival. Everyone in a rural village grows their own food, they must. There is little or no paid work, and what little paid work there is will not cover food costs. Therefore, if a family does not grow enough food, malnutrition and starvation becomes a real threat. Poor soil quality along with adverse agricultural practices results in frequent crop failure. The agricultural project set about to address this situation by providing training in good agricultural techniques, crop diversification, in-field mentoring/monitoring and a revolving loan to enable these vulnerable families to purchase the seed varieties that produce the higher yields and enough fertilizer to provide for a successful harvest.
